“Remy?” William called as he searched the ship. “Remy are you here?” William’s boots thudded audibly across the deck. “It’s so bizarre being on here with everyone off the ship… you think it’d be easier to find one person, but no. Reeeeeeeeeeeemy where are youuuu? Nope not near the cannons…thought he’d be here, he likes the view.” William made his way back to the upper deck, then across the boat to the Captain’s quarters. “Remy?”

“William?” a voice called back.
”Where are you?”
Remy opened the door to the Captain’s quarters. “In here.”
“There you are. What are you still doing on the boat? Everyone’s off already, I thought you fell into the sea walking down the ramp or something. Are you fetching something the Captain left?”
“No, I’m waiting for you to come find me.”
William raised an eyebrow. “Pardon? Don’t you want to be off the bloody ship? We got so much money to spend.”
Remy shrugged. “Most of it’s going in the bank anyway. But the one thing I want isn’t in town.” Remy tossed his hat on the table.
William raised an eyebrow. “I must reminder you to be frank with me. I didn’t become a pirate because I was a scholar at Oxford.”
Remy chuckled. “Well, Mr. William. Who is on this boat right now?”
“You and I.”
“Right. And who is going to hear us if we fuck?”
“Well there isn’t anyone… oh. Ohhh. William understands now.”
Remy laughed. “Do you?”
“Yes. Yes I do.”
“And guess what? We can pick absolutely anywhere in the whole ship.”
William’s eyes went wide. “Even the Captain’s bed?” He pointed.
“Yes. Although…” Remy tapped his fingers together. “I’m not really sure how clean that is, maybe, we stick to the sofa.”
William winced. “Mmn it is a comfortable piece of furniture.”
“It really is.”
“And also, maybe…?” He gestured to the large map table.
Remy made a dramatic little gasp. “William you rapscallion.”
William grinned. “Have we got enough grease?”
“Just enough. Bottom of the container.” Remy patted his pocket.
William began to unbutton Remy’s shirt as he undid his own belt. “Did we go through that whole thing already? We just bought it in Barbados…”
“I’m afraid we have. We’ll have to buy it in bulk here. Although, actually, we should see if there’s a shop here that sells other stuff-”
William interrupted him with a kiss. “What other stuff?”
Remy undid his William’s pants. “Other things that can be fun in the bedroom. I’ve heard some rumors of things from those women we rescued last week.”
“I haven’t a clue of what you’re talking about.” William ran his palms over Remy’s chest. “And I’m more interested about this stuff right now. You, me, and …um. The furniture.”
Remy kissed him back. “Well let’s get to it. Lest someone comes looking for us. I will be most cross if we’re interrupted. I want you to take your time.”
William grabbed his ass with both hands. “We have time.”

In a bar in town:
“Has anyone noticed Remy and Will are missing?” Jeremiah asked.
“Duh, we all know they’re missing.” Samuel said.
“Why are they missing?” Jeremiah asked. “Do we need to be concerned?”
Samuel looked at the other lads around the table and everyone started laughing. Samuel ruffled his hair. “Jeremiah, one day when you’re old enough, we’ll explain it to you.”
Jeremiah crossed his arms. “I am old enough. I’m almost 12.”
Dennis leaned in. “Trust me, lad. You don’t want to know. It’s gross.”
“Are they cleaning the toilet on the ship?”
That just made everyone laugh again which made Jeremiah look even more confused. Samuel shook his head and smiled. “Drink your beer, Jeremiah. They’re fine.” He paused. “I just hope they’re not on my bunk.”

I dress and watch him. He’s stretching, enjoying the sun on his skin. We’re a little late this morning. We had some quick sex before a shower. He’s glowing and energetic. Ready to face his work  – letting the chickens out, gathering eggs, feeding the horse, and getting the newspaper. He’ll make breakfast. I’ll make the bed, put in laundry, make tea, and we’ll eat together. Then I’ll head into my office in the backyard to work, he’ll go into his ceramics studio, and we’ll regroup for a game of badminton before lunch.

He finishes his stretches and moves to head out.
“Reggie?” I say, catching him mid-step.
“Yessir?”
“Are you happy here? I mean, do you miss the city at all? Your previous lifestyle?”
Reginald raises an eyebrow. “Where did that come from?”
“Cause like you make me so happy I feel sick sometimes, and I just can’t help but feel a bit guilty my happiness may come at expense of your own.”
Reginald smiles. “It doesn’t matter where I am as long as I’m with you, Sir.”
A lump forms in my throat. “But you have to miss things a little bit…”
Reggie thinks. “I miss take out. And I miss the convenience of popping to the store for things. And the clubs. But then I remember I have my own horse, and I can walk around naked without the neighbors complaining, and I’m eating veg from my garden. I can always go to the clubs on a city visit, like we did last month-” he points at me. I nod. “But at the end, I like coming home here. To our home.”
“Ah. Well that’s good.” I manage to choke that out around the growing lump.
“Just good?” Reginald teases me.
“Very good. Great – it’s, it’s great. Better than uh, great.”
Reginald giggles. He walks back up to give me a hug. I sigh in contentment as his bare body presses against mine. I embrace him back tight. He’s even warmer than this morning.
“I love you,” Reggie says.
“I love you too.” I reply
He squeezes my arm and flashes a little smile. “Better not keep the chickens waiting or they will be cross if they’re not let out.” I wave him off. He kisses the corner of my mouth and floats off. I sigh. I stare at the void he left in the room with wistfulness.

“Nooo come on, you’re going on a date with me and that’s final.”
“I can’t – I just – I can’t, I’m sorry, I need to go.” Marcus pulls his hand away.
“You told me an hour you had nothing else going on tonight. What’s the worst that’s going to happen? That you’ll enjoy yourself? That you’ll have fun?”
Marcus shoves his hands into his pockets and looks around. “I don’t know, I just, I’m not ready yet.”
“So is going home and hiding in the closet really the best solution?” Ricky put his fists on his hips. “Are you worried about being seen? Like someone is secretly filming you and broadcasting you to everyone you know? Cause trust me, no one gives a shit who you go out on a date with.”
Marcus looks uneasy.
“Ok. How about this. I won’t try and hold your hand. We’ll just walk next to each other. Ok? We’ll go down to the beach and get some tacos from a food truck and walk around. We don’t have to go into a fancy restaurant or do anything formal. Just chill. Feed some pigeons or something.”
Marcus glances around again and then at Ricky. “You really want to spend time with me.”
“What? Yeah. I do. I’ve had a crush on you for a while,” Ricky admits.
“Me.”
“Yes, silly. That’s why I’ve been trying to get you to go out on a date with me. You can’t hide forever, all you’re gonna do is make yourself lonely and waste your best years. Ok, how about this, even if you don’t want to see me again after this date, consider this a practice date ok?” Ricky offers.
Marcus thought a moment. “Ok.”
Ricky looks surprised. “What, really? I mean, that’s good.” .
“I think the idea of just being in a fancy restaurant, you know, feeling pressure to hold hands or kiss someone… I’m still too new for that. But tacos, that’s a bit more my style.”
“That’s fair. I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable. Or rushed you.”
Marcus shook his head. “You didn’t. I’m sorry I keep freaking out. Just…still accepting I’m gay, that’s all.”
Ricky nods. “Soooooo… I’m guessing you have questions about sex?”
Marcus scoffs. “So many. I do not get anything. I made the mistake of looking at the BDSM section of this website the other day …oh my god.”
Ricky laughs “Don’t do that, you’re going to scare your dick back inside you.”
“Listen, I’m not entirety on board with what my dick wants, but I still want it to work. Do people actually like that stuff or do they only do it in porn?”

Ricky jerks his head to one side and they begin to walk together down the street, talking, laughing. Conversation still flowing as they got tacos and walked along to the beach to find some place to eat them. The conversation dissolved into a game of “fuck marry kill”, and they were laughing so hard Marcus got tears in his eyes. He was beginning to think this wasn’t a bad way to spend an evening after all.

David looked at his boyfriend. “I think you’re going to have to move in with me.”
Heath worked his lips once or twice until they made sounds. “H-have to?” He’d been waiting for David to ask him to move in since the first week he met him. Over a year later, he’d began to think David valued his space more than intimacy.
“Well. Yeah. Look at our dogs. They’ve in love.”
Heath looked at them. He’d gotten the golden retriever two weeks ago. The Irish setter was David’s long time buddy. “But you don’t want to move in together cause you’re not in love with me?” He asked softly.
David made a grunting noise and rubbed the back of his neck. “Something something not good at expressing at my feelings, something something trying to do it through dog metaphors.”
Heath watched his face turn red and he couldn’t help but smile. So that’s all it was. Good ol’ fashioned male stubbornness.
“You love me?” Heath asked.
“It’s hard for me say that word out loud.”
“Why?”
“Cause it’s scary. How can you say it so easily?”
“Cause it’s how I feel. And it’s easy to talk about my happy emotions.”
David put his hand on Heath’s arm. “You’re happy?”
Heath nodded.
David nuzzled him. “I’m happy too.”
“You mean the dogs are happy,” Heath teased.
“Yes that. Look how happy they are.”
“So happy. So clearly moving in together is the best thing. For them, I mean.”
“Oh yes,” David agreed. “For them. Absolutely. Also, I’ve also heard that a one bedroom is going to be available on the floor above me soon. View of the park. I think the dogs would like that more than the studio.”
Heath looked pleased. “I think they’d like that a lot.” He snuggled up to David. “Oh what have we here…some part of you is also happy.”
He turned red again. “I can’t control that.”
“Mmn. Well it’s pretty prominent. Should be easy enough to find under the sheets…”
“Are you— ah! Ohhhh Heath~”

“Hey…you came.”
Courtney yawned. “Of course I did. I had to give you your blanket back.”
“You didn’t have to,” Alec said. “You could have kept it.”
“I want to. But my parents would know it’s yours. My mom asked you about it on the first day. She’d get suspicious about why I have it.”
Alec sighed. “But if you give it back, it means it’s over. I don’t want you to go.”
Courtney pressed his lips together to keep his chin from trembling. “I don’t want to either. Dad’s got this whole schedule for the trip…” he waved his hand and trailed off.
Alec swallowed hard.
Courtney sniffled. They leaned forward and shared a soft kiss, almost not daring to touch at all. Courtney held his denim jacket closed with his fingers to ward off the morning chill. Birds chirped as dawn broke over the desert.
They parted.
Alec watched Courtney fold the blanket and pass it over.
“Here. I’m sorry it’s not uh, clean, I think it still has some of our.. you know on it…” Courtney scuffed his foot in the dust.
Aelc took it and held it to his chest. “I don’t care. That night we spent under the stars was beautiful. Nothing about it is gross to me.”
Courtney smiled.
“I still wish you would keep it though. Cause then I had proof that you were here. Cause once you leave it’ll be like it never happened.” Alec paused. “Fuck.”
Courtney hugged him. Alec crushed him back.
“I’ll give you something else to remember me by before I leave. And I’ll write.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”

Alec exhaled. He looked over his shoulder. “My shift is going to start soon.”
“Then I guess this is good bye?”
“Well… Good bye then,” Alec said.
Courtney scuffed his foot. He looked down and turned to walk away.
Alec couldn’t bare it after three steps. “Court?”
Courtney turned halfway. “Yeah?”
“I love you.”
Courtney’s mouth parted. The words stuck to his dry lips and it took a second to loosen them. “I love you too.”
Alec’s face lit up.
Courtney ran back to his family’s RV, laughing with giddiness.

Later that morning, when they left the camping park, Courtney sat in the back of the camper as it pulled out of the entrance to the RV park. His parents were up front, dad was driving. There were no separate lanes, just a wide dusty path for big turns. Courtney could see Alec was up ahead; he had come out of the welcome booth to watch them go. Courtney got on his knees and squeezed his arm through the slight gap in the window, as far as it would go, hand clutched around something. When the timing was right, Courtney jerked his elbow and a small rectangle went flying.

Alec dove for it. It bounced off his fingertips but he barely caught it before it hit the ground. When he parted his hands, his jaw dropped. It was Madonna’s new cassette tape. The one they’d listened to in the portable, that night, under the stars. They’d talked about it for an hour after. It had blown Alec’s mind. Alec rarely got new music; his family only went to the city with the music store like once or twice a year. Alec clutched his treasure to his chest and watched the RV go until it was just a cloud of dust.
There was a tiny corner sticking out of it. He pushed his tears away and opened it. Inside was a white scrap of paper. On it was Courtney’s address and three words. “I was here.”

“So um…you seemed to be enjoying yourself today.”
“I did. I really did. I had a great day, actually. Matter of fact, most dates I spend with you go pretty well. You know, besides the last one.”
William winced. “Yeah that was a mistake.”
“But you’ve made up for it.”
“I have?”
“Yep. It was a litmus test too.”
William looked at John and wondered if doing that would always give him those butterflies. “A test for what?”
“To see how you handled stuff not going well. You apologized, admitted fault, told me what could be done better, and you improved on it. I respect that.”
William felt like someone had pulled all the wind of his chest. “Wow, t-thank you,” he stammered. “I just you know – didn’t want to lose the connections we’d made so far. I couldn’t reason with losing dating you because of that stupid decision.”
“Aww, that’s sweet. You like spending time with me Will?”
Will rubbed the back of his neck. “Yeah. I do.”
John squeezed his shoulder. “I do too. And you know what?”
“What?”
“You’re getting laid tonight, because of your efforts to repair things.”
“What?” Will almost tripped over his feet. “I am??”
“You are. It’s all I can think about right now.”
Will thrust his elbow backwards. “Yesss!”
That made John laugh. “I don’t think anyone’s been so excited to sleep with me.”
“Hey, anytime a gay black dude wants to show me his dick is a reason for celebration.”
John burst out laughing. “Well that is one way to put it!”
“And it’s extra special cause it’s you.”
John shook his head. “You flatter me, Will.” John reached for Will’s hand and wrapped their fingers together. “I could get used to that.”
“Could? So there will be like…other dates?”
“I hope so,” John said in a soft, hopeful tone.
Will beamed back at him. “Would breakfast in my kitchen tomorrow count?”
“I do think it would. That sounds so nice. Oh, there’s the grocery store across the street… maybe we should uhhh pick up some uh, things, if you catch my drift?”
Will turned a little pink. “I think we should.”
“Yeah, bacon and eggs for sure. And once we have the breakfast items, THEN we go buy dildos and condoms.”
That made Will lose it. John was ridiculous sometimes. Will had been so nervous for this date, and John had both forgiven him and promised him sex. The butterflies in his stomach were doing the Olympics. And the guy had a sense of humor? Will hoped they last as a couple. Mostly though, he hoped he lasted during sex!

Joseph got up to pee on Christmas morning, decided he felt awake enough, and went to go make spiced tea and bring Mike a present. When he got up stairs though, he saw Mike sleeping alone in bed with their dog and longed to join them again. He set the tea on the floor with the boxes, and crawled back into his rightful place in bed. Tea could be reheated. So could a bed.

Joseph wished he could tell his younger self that it wasn’t sad that adults didn’t get excited over Christmas like kids did. When you can buy your own toys, priority change. Besides, Joseph realized, he had everything he could ever want right there in bed with him – and he got it all year around. However, Joseph would probably not tell his younger self that having Christmas as a day off was the best time to have real good sex. Younger Joseph would figure that one out eventually.
