Johan gets a look at his new home in the German countryside where he will be indentured for the next four years, trying to imagine how his life is going to change. He cannot even begin to conceive the person he is about to become. It is scary but it is much better than the alternative – prison. Johan fusses with the towel and hopes his new Master is kind. He hopes his Master will not just put him to work, but improve him, and make him a new man.
